President’s Corner

Don Yeaton

President’s Corner

Don Yeaton

“ Your life is a gift from the Creator. Your gift back to the Creator is what you do with your life.” – Billy Mills, surprise gold medal winner of the 10,000 meter race at the 1960 Olympics in Tokoyo, Japan and the only American and full blooded Sioux Indian to ever win the gold in that event!

Several years ago at the post race festivities of a well known local race, I overheard some comments made by a well known, fast runner (who has since moved away) that surprised me. I had a lot of respect for this runner, but after hearing what he said, my opinion was altered. He had just won this particular race and had won another race on the day before and was bragging to his friends about his victory and demeaning other runners he had beaten.

When our running is going well, it is easy to get the feeling that we are invincible or indestructible. The running comes so easy and every race brings a new PR – I could take this feeling forever! Add in a couple of outright wins or age group wins and the head swells even bigger. But those of you who have been running and racing for awhile, know that that euphoria is only temporary. Sooner or later the streak stops and we get hit with a dose of real life.

We fail to realize what mortals we are. You can be a strong runner on one day and the next day have a hard time getting from your bed to the bathroom. You know the feeling when you get a bad cold or the flu or bronchitis or THE INJURY!

Allow me to present exhibit A and exhibit B for evidence of this truth. Exhibit A - After coming off an injury to my left Achilles heel that sidelined me for nearly 5 months in 2006, I was finally able to get running again and regain some of my lost fitness and speed as this spring and summer racing season geared up. I was able to run well at the Utica Boilermaker 15K back on July 8th and managed to run/walk a 53K for my 56th birthday on July 14th from Rochester to York Beach. (My goal was a 56K, but after 32.8 miles, my legs said, “Enough!”) I was hoping for a good 5K at the Thunder Chicken race in Portsmouth on Aug. 2nd, but before I reached mile 1, my right hamstring began to cramp up. I was reduced to a walk by the first mile marker and it took me nearly a mile to get “running” very slowly again. It was a PW – personal worst – 5K in almost 32 minutes. It happened once again at the St. Charles 5K with a new PW of 40:49!

Exhibit B – In 2005 Scott Rowe ran the Utica Boilermaker 15K in 50:20, good enough for 30th overall with a 5:24 pave in the biggest 15K in the USA.  He finished 2 seconds behind well known New England runner, Eric Morse. He returned in 2006 in even better shape and looking to lower his time even more. Unfortunately, due to pushing and shoving at the start, Scott was knocked flat on his face as he sprinted from the start line. He got right up and was able to catch those who had pushed him, but just beyond the first mile marker he was all done. When he went down, he suffered a broken big toe that made running any further impossible. I finally found Scott about an hour and half after I finished,  hobbling into the medical tent near the finish line. They patched him up, not really knowing the extent of his toe injury at the time. We started the 3 or 4 block long walk back to the car, but Scott was in too much pain to walk any further. I went and got my car and brought it to him.

Both of these injuries happened so quickly with no warning to me a mid-pack runner and to Scott a sub elite runner. Scott spent the next 6 weeks recovering from a broken toe and went on to run a 2:29 at Chicago in the fall of 2006. And I am still trying to recover from this lingering hamstring strain in time for the Reach the Beach Relay in only 9 days!

What’s my point? When things are going well, remember this quote above from Billy Mills. Your success is not all self generated. You may train very hard, but don’t foget who gives you that ability and that it can vanish so quickly. So quickly that you may find it hard to remember what it was like to run with no pain and as hard and as fast as you can! So be THANKFUL!

Running Notes

Don Yeaton

1.      Scott Rowe just won the Swanzey Covered Bridges ½ Marathon on Sunday September 2nd. Not only did he win the race in 1:09:08, but he broke the course record held by Mark Miller by 42 seconds, had a personal PR by 1:50 and beat the second place finisher by 5:33!!!

2.      Our Lake Winni Relay Team this year named “Fleet Feet” consists of Clayton Lewis, Mark Galarneau, Ford Bishop, Bob Rondeau, Mike Andrews, Peter Whitten, Guillaume Moreau and Don Yeaton. Guillaume or the English equivalent – William – is from France and one of our newest members. He is here working at Lydall in Rochester for 6 months as a chemical engineer.

3.      2nd Annual Monster Mash 5K will be held on Oct. 21st at 9 AM. The race is sponsored by the North Berwick Physical Therapy to help fight childhood obesity. E-mail Julie at jules44@comcast.net or call 207-676-8500 for more info on how to register.

4.      We are looking for a new newsletter editor. Alison Black has done a great job for several years now and would like to step down from this position. Are you interested? Let us know!

Newsletter Editor Needed

Alison Black

As Don mentioned in his Running Notes, I am looking to step down as Newsletter Editor after several years of service (I think it’s been four years but I’m not sure).  I am willing to complete my official term, which ends with the December newsletter.  It would be helpful to train someone some time this fall.  If you are interested in learning more about the position, please email me at tennpurp@yahoo.com.  Thanks!

Free Fall Classic Race Update

Dave Abbett, Race Director

As the Thanksgiving Day Free Fall Classic 5K nears I want to update the club on where we are with preparations as well as let you know how you can help. This year’s race will be held behind the Rochester Community Center and we will run/ walk the old St. Charles 5k course. This course is an out and back, fast and flat 5k that heads out Chestnut Hill Road, turns around near the entrance to Roger Allen Park and returns to end on the Spaulding Track. We are looking to certify the course within the next month or so. The certification is good for 10 years. By having the certification we hope to draw runners from around the area to best our course record as well as set year-end PRs.

As this race is to raise money for the Rochester Homeless Shelter, we have been working to gain sponsorship from previous sponsors as well as some new sponsors. Just today Quiznos offered to donate 320 cookies and Hannaford’s gave me a verbal that they will donate food product as they did last year. That leads me to the most important part of the race: the volunteers.

In order to host an event we need volunteers. If you would like to help out in anyway you will not be turned away. The following areas still need help:

  • Registration Table
  • Food Table: set up/ breakdown
  • Water Stop #2
  • Finish Line Help
  • Pre-race Set Up
  • Post-race Breakdown
  • Direction Person

If you would like to help in any of the above or in any way we would be happy to have you.

Thanks and see you race day…

Kids Love to Run Too!

Janet Glazier

Attention RR Moms, Dads, Grandparents too--

Do you have a little guy or gal who has

                just run a fun run?

                      run their FIRST 5k?

distinguished themselves in some cute or endearing way

                                 with their zest for running?

We'd love to get their names and the runs they participated in, perhaps including their

age, where they ran, what they won or received for doing the run--and any quick quotes from them for the newsletter!

Our club is an equal age/opportunity club---whether 5 years old or 85 years young!

The deadline to get into the September newsletter is Sept. 5th, but any interesting Kid-Bits will be printed in the October newsletter!

Keep smiling and running to you all!

The 2007 Rochester Runners Grand Prix Update

Paul Lindsay

2Sep07 RRGP update:  This is the first update since 5Aug, because of a vacation trip, summer company, computer problems, etc.  Please let me know if I missed a race that you ran in the last month.  This update includes results from the Kingston Firemen’s 5 mile, CIGNA 5K in Manchester, St. Peter’s 4 mile in Portland, Alton Old Home Day 5K, Belmont 10 mile, Lamprey Health 5K in Newmarket, Saunders 10K in Rye, Moose on the Loose 10 mile NHGP trail race, Loco Seacoast 5000 m, Barnstead Old Home Day 5K, CHaD Outrun the Sun Half Marathon in Hanover, and Run to Fall 5K xc in Northwood.  Congratulations to Scott Rowe, overall winner of the Saunders 10K, which attracted a good turnout as part of the Seacoast Series, including 32 RRs.  Club members who won their age groups in one or more races included Sin Kounlasa, Norm Steigler, Judy Brenner, Ken Houle, Dick L’Heureux, John Tuttle, Drew Tuttle, Judi Lemaire, Bob Randall, Jack Collopy, and Isaac Fithian.  Even in this part of the year with some uncomfortably hot and humid weather for training and racing, Chris Apkarian, Don Yeaton, Rick Collopy, Isaac Fithian, Drew Tuttle, Brian Geiger, and Arlon Chaffee managed to run their best races in a year or more, to lower their RRGP baselines.  Chris Apkarian, Ken Houle, Judy Brenner, and John Tuttle earned the distinction of “asterisks” next to their finish times, signifying that they were faster than the USATF age-group performance standards for their age groups.

S=speed points, D=distance points, t=team points, T=total points (for best 10 races), and n=number of races (check to see that all yours are accounted for).  For a detailed explanation of the RRGP, visit rochesterrunners.com.  Charts and speed point goals should be updated on our website soon.  Please send corrections, questions, and comments to bplindsay@hotmail.com.

Hope to see many of you at the St. Charles Children’s Home 5K NHGP race tomorrow!
